What does website control actually mean?
Website ownership is not a single yes-or-no question. Your domain, hosting, website files, content licenses, and service agreement can be controlled separately. This quiz helps you identify gaps and ask better questions; it does not verify account access or determine legal rights.
Your six-point website control checklist
Domain access
Can you access the registrar account, manage renewal, and change domain settings? Confirm your business controls the account and recovery details.
Administrator access
Can you edit your site and manage users? A login helps you manage a site, but does not by itself establish ownership.
Content and design rights
Does your agreement say which text, photos, design elements, and other assets you may keep and reuse? Third-party licenses may have separate restrictions.
Usable backups
Can you obtain the files and database needed to restore the site? Check whether dependencies or paid components are excluded.
Portability
Can the site move to another host, or would the platform require a rebuild? Ask about export options, licenses, and transfer costs.
Cancellation terms
What notice is required, what charges remain, and when does access or hosting end? Keep the answer in writing.
Before you switch website providers
Confirm your agreement and cancellation timing first. Arrange domain access, preserve email settings, collect materials you own or may reuse, and build and test the replacement before taking the existing site offline. Map old page addresses to new ones and plan redirects to reduce disruption. Search rankings can change during a migration.

Website ownership questions, answered
Does an administrator login mean I own my website?
No. Administrator access lets you manage parts of the site. Your agreement and licenses determine what you can keep, reuse, or transfer.
Can I always move my current website?
No. Some platforms support exports or transfers; others require rebuilding. Confirm your platform, asset rights, and transfer options before canceling.
Will the quiz contact my provider or access my accounts?
No. It uses your answers to create a self-check report and a message you can send yourself. It does not access accounts, contact anyone, or submit your answers to 318.
Does 318 charge a monthly website ownership fee?
No. A new 318 website has a one-time project price. Once paid in full, there is no monthly fee to 318 to retain ownership. Hosting and domain renewal remain ongoing expenses. Any paid plugins or recurring third-party services are disclosed before you commit.
Are maintenance services mandatory?
No. Maintenance services are optional and are not required to keep your website. You can choose ongoing help or manage maintenance yourself.
