What Is Conversion Rate? Turn Visits Into Leads

Conversion rate is the percentage of a defined set of visits or interactions that results in a chosen action. For a service business, that action might be a completed inquiry. The number is meaningful only when you know what was counted and which audience was measured.

Remember these 3 things about Conversion Rate

Define what counts. A phone click is not the same as a completed call.

Compare like with like. Use consistent goals, audiences, and time periods.

Quality matters alongside quantity. More conversions help only when the inquiries fit your business.

How to calculate conversion rate

Divide conversions by the relevant visits or interactions, then multiply by 100. If 10 of 200 website sessions produce an inquiry, the session-to-inquiry rate is 5%. Use matching dates and a consistent denominator. A platform calculating conversions per ad interaction may show a different rate from your website report.

Choose an action that matters

A submitted form, booked appointment, phone-link click, and newsletter signup represent different levels of intent. A phone click is not proof of a connected call. Report those actions separately so a high volume of low-intent activity does not hide a shortage of real inquiries.

A practical local example

A Bossier City business receives 300 visits and 15 inquiries: a 5% session-to-inquiry rate. If only three inquiries match its service and area, the qualified-inquiry rate is 1%. Improving targeting may be more valuable than changing a button color. These figures are illustrative, not industry benchmarks.

Why a rate changes

Traffic mix, mobile usability, page speed, offer clarity, seasonality, and measurement changes can all affect a rate. Compare like with like. A campaign reaching new prospects may convert differently from visitors searching for your business name. Small samples can swing sharply after one or two inquiries.

What to improve first

Check that the form works on a phone, the next step is obvious, and essential service details are easy to find. Remove unnecessary fields when they do not help qualify an inquiry. Test one meaningful change at a time and monitor inquiry quality as well as volume.

Ask before you buy

What exactly counts as a conversion? Can duplicate submissions or thank-you page reloads inflate the number? Are staff visits excluded? How are consent choices affecting measurement? Can we connect inquiries to qualified opportunities? Ask for the definition alongside every conversion-rate report.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Still wondering?

Quick answers before you go. Open any question below.

What is a good conversion rate?

There is no single useful target for every business. Compare your own consistent measurements by traffic source, device, offer, and lead quality.

Are clicks on my phone number leads?

They show intent to call, but do not confirm a completed conversation. Label them as phone clicks unless you have call tracking that verifies calls.

Why do GA4 and my ad platform disagree?

They can use different attribution rules, conversion definitions, dates, and denominators. Consent and implementation differences can also affect the totals.

Can fewer visits produce better results?

Yes. More relevant visitors can generate more qualified inquiries even when overall traffic falls.

Should I count newsletter signups as sales leads?

Track signups separately. They may support future demand, but should not be presented as equivalent to a sales inquiry.
